Retired Teachers to Learn of Literacy Program at Monrovia Public Library

Retired teachers never stop caring about education and about students, whether the students are in a school classroom or elsewhere in the community. A good example of community outreach is the Literacy Program at the Monrovia Public Library, a goal-oriented program designed to meet the adult learner’s individual needs. Along with individualized instruction, some classroom activities include core workbooks, reading classroom newspapers, and conversation groups. The California Retired Teachers Association #71 (CalRTA) will learn more about the Literacy Program when Coordinator Victor Castellanos is guest speaker at their luncheon meeting on Friday, April 13 at 11:30 a.m.
The CalRTA meeting will take place at the Monrovia Community Center, 119 S. Palm Ave., Monrovia, CA 91016. Renovations are being completed at the customary meeting place in Arcadia. Some parking is available next to the Monrovia Community Center, or on-street parking is available. The cost of the luncheon is $12 for members. For luncheon reservations, please call John Gera at (626) 286-0714 by April 6. The cost of the luncheon for those who pay at the door without reservations is $13.
On the program, Joe Callahan from the Literacy Program will add a tutor’s perspective to Coordinator Victor Castellanos’ comments. Also speaking is CalRTA #71’s scholarship recipient Nick Cardet, Cal Poly Pomona graduate, who is now teaching language arts at Clifton Middle School, Monrovia. Finally, Mrs. Denise R. Jaramillo, Superintendent of Alhambra USD, will add a brief message as a follow-up to the other superintendents’ presentations at the last CalRTA #71 meeting.
Membership in the California Retired Teachers Association is open to all retired educators, as well as to current educators and to any others interested in joining this active group. CalRTA’s motto is “Your Partner in Pension Protection.”
