Readers’ Choice 2018 Revisits the “Power of the Press”
It’s been a tough couple of years for business, particularly the newspaper business. People appear to be reading less print and spending time, albeit brief, on digital devices and perusing social media threads.
Beacon Media News’ papers, notably Arcadia Weekly, Monrovia Weekly, Pasadena Independent, and Sierra Madre Weekly (AMPS) are the picture-perfect blend of the longstanding and the new technology. While we embrace this technology, we also continue to cherish the power of the printed word in an open and democratic society.
We treasure the rich history of the printed word, “the power of the free press,” as Beacon Media News vehemently defends the First Amendment.
Remember Watergate and the decline and fall of Richard M. Nixon?
Who broke the news that forced the most powerful man to resign and leave the White House in disgrace? It most certainly wasn’t Facebook or any algorithm.
It was two very bright and tireless young reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein and their more seasoned and tough-talking editor, Ben Bradlee at The Washington Post who helped define a national dialogue and enormous respect and pride for print journalism.
Sadly, the current administration has made it blatantly clear it has little respect for news media. POTUS insists on labeling just about every newspaper and network as ‘fake news,’ unless of course, it’s FOX and spends far too much time tweeting his maligned anger and frustrations.
Meanwhile, back in the real world, Beacon Media News’ AMPS publications focuse on real, local community news, and has done so for the past 20 years. We continue to strive for excellence in reporting accurate and timely local news that impacts our local areas. We focus on community members who make a difference.
Our Annual Tip-of-the hat to local businesses appropriately named ‘Readers’ Choice’ is coming later this year. It is an annual celebration and reflection of our readers’ choice of their FAVORITES in the area. This year’s theme, in honor of print journalism, is ‘The Power of the Press.’ The open ballot begins in April! Stay tuned for official dates!
