At about 7:30 a.m., Pasadena Police officers responded to the 600 block of North Lake Avenue regarding an armed suspect inside the Reny Coffee Shop. As officers were driving to the location, they learned that the suspect was an employee at the coffee shop and told his coworkers he wanted to commit suicide.  The suspect, possibly under the influence of a controlled substance, displayed a pistol to his coworkers, who immediately left the restaurant simultaneously calling the police. On arrival, officers contained the restaurant and attempted to call the suspect.  After several phone calls, the suspect finally answered. The suspect told officers he was armed, barricaded in the restaurant, and abruptly ended the conversation. Several more attempts were made to contact the suspect over the phone and business line; however, the suspect did not answer.

The Pasadena Police Special Weapons and Tactics Team responded to the incident.  After several more attempts to contact the suspect inside the restaurant, the SWAT team cautiously entered the location.  After a complete search of the restaurant, SWAT officers determined the suspect was not at the location.  The case was immediately turned over to police detectives, who were concerned the suspect was armed, possibly under the influence of a controlled substance, and was wandering the community.  At approximately 12:30 p.m., PPD personnel contacted the Fugitive Apprehension Unit (FAU) and requested their assistance.  About two hours later, FAU located the suspect in Los Angeles. Although the suspect was armed at the time of contact, he was arrested without incident by the FAU Team. He was taken to the Pasadena jail and booked on several charges.

At about 7:00 a.m., law enforcement officials from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office completed an undercover operation near Rosemont and Seco Avenue, resulting in the arrest of a LASD deputy and three additional suspects. The FBI and LASD officials used a variety of tactics; including the deployment of a Flash Sound Diversionary Device, and a police helicopter.

At about 3:28 p.m., Pasadena Police officers responded to a commercial burglary investigation in the 1000 block of Rose Bowl Drive.  While driving to the call, officers learned that security agents saw a male enter the fenced concourse area of the Rose Bowl.  The agents confronted the subject; however, they disengaged their approach when he (the suspect) became aggressive.  The suspect left the Rose Bowl with a bag of stolen items.  On arrival, PPD officers talked with the security agents.  Other officers checked the immediate area and located the suspect, who was arrested without incident. The suspect was taken to the Pasadena jail and booked for burglary.

At about 5:28 p.m., Pasadena Police officers investigated an armed robbery in the 100 block of West California Boulevard.  On arrival, officers talked with a clerk who said he saw the suspect (male Hispanic, 5”-10,’ 230-250 pounds, fake beard, light blue shirt, and jeans) walk into the business. The suspect immediately attempted to disguise his face with a fake beard while quickly walking toward the clerk.  The suspect displayed a gun and ordered the clerk to lie on the floor. Fearing for his safety, the clerk complied with the suspect’s orders.  The suspect then removed US currency from the cash drawer and fled the location. Despite a comprehensive search, PPD officers were not able to locate the suspect.

Over the past several weeks, Pasadena Police officers have investigated a rash of shoplifting incidents, which were elevated to Estes Robberies, because of the suspects’ actions. Each of the robberies occurred at a different business and five (5) suspects were arrested.  The cases were assigned to Detective V. Cass, who completed comprehensive follow-up investigations on each case.  Following his investigations, Detective Cass met with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, where he secured robbery filing on all five suspects.  The suspects were operating independent of one another, which made the follow up investigations complex and difficult.  The robbery suspects were identified as Jeffrey Dorsey; Nathan Cejudo; Jasmine Davis; Antonio Lopez and Jeremiah Calhoun.
