In October of this year, the Kiwanis Club of Monrovia donated $20,000 to the City to make improvements at Kiwanis Park at Grand Avenue.  City staff and members of the club have been working together to form a plan for the update.  Below is a list of those improvements and a rough schedule for the work:

-Fencing – The old fence will be demolished starting next week.  Temporary fencing will be put in place due to the drop off on the hillside.  The area will be graded prior to the new fence being installed.  The new fence will be made of powder coated tubular steel in black, similar to the new fence at Julian Fisher Park.

-Solar Light – Better Home Energy has donated a solar light to help facilitate evening lighting at the park. Working with a representative of that company, the city has determined the best spot is at the northeast corner near the playground and picnic area, a spot that will light a well-used area but not negatively impact the neighbors.  Better Home Energy is donating not only the light but also installing it.

-Furnishings – (4 Picnic Tables, 3 Trash Cans, and a Bike Rack) The city will be ordering the new furnishings that will be powder coated green with a Kiwanis logo. The placement of these items will be done in coordination with members of the Kiwanis.

-Memorial Benches – A memorial bench will also be installed in consultation with the Kiwanis.

-Drinking Fountain – This will be installed as soon as the new fountain arrives.  It will be placed near the bottom of the staircase (that lead to Grand venue) and will feature three water dispensing options, one traditional, one to bottle filler, and one to be used as a dog bowl…something for everyone.

-Irrigation – The city is continuing to work on improving the irrigation system at the park.  While according to City Manager Oliver Chi, the brown spot problem has been resolved, the city is now working to cut back on some water to minimize the puddles that have occurred.

-Christmas Tree – Members of the City Staff and the Kiwanis are working to establish a Christmas Tree at the park

-New Samson Bear – Lastly A new Samson Bear has been ordered by the Kiwanis Club and is currently being painted.  The Kiwanians and city will select a location for this Beloved Monrovia icon soon.

The City Manager has promised to keep the community updated on all the improvements the generous donation of the Kiwanis Club of Monrovia.
