The Pasadena City College football team’s season has come to a close, and with it, the offseason has begun for almost 100 players. California Junior College football is extremely competitive, as players come from all corners of the country to chase their college football dreams. Many states do not have have junior college football programs, many others have only a handful of choices. In the National Junior College Athletic Association, which includes every junior football team in the country not from the state of California, there are 65 programs. In the California Community College Athletic Association, there are 69.
For PCC and every California team, winning the State Championship is a daunting task, but for all, it is the goal. This season, PCC finished with a 5-5 record. They had a fine offense, scoring 31.1 points per game, but the defense, giving up 30.7 points per game, was often their Achilles Heel.
PCC began their season with three consecutive losses, falling at the hands of Long Beach, San Bernardo Valley, and Allan Hancock. In the middle of the season, however, they would make a run. In five consecutive weeks, PCC would win each game, beating Southwestern, Compton, West LA, Glendale, and LA Southwest. They were truly dominant during their five game winning streak, beating the previously mentioned teams by an average of 22 points per game. PCC was unable to keep their streak alive, however, and they fell in their final two games.
Three players on the PCC roster are natives of Pasadena and played in Pasadena high schools. Torus Stepney, Jr., a sophomore corner from Pasadena High School, Christopher Lee, a freshman corner from Blair High School, and Jasper Iheaso, a freshman defensive lineman from Muir High School, each played for PCC this season. While Stepney will move on to the next phase of his life and career, Lee and Iheaso will have another chance at Pasadena City College next season.
