The Theatre @ Boston Court Now Accepting Submissions for Los Angeles-Based Playwrights

The Theatre @ Boston Court is now accepting play submissions from Los Angeles-based playwrights through November 15 for consideration in the 2018 New Play Reading Festival.  Curated by Literary Manager Emilie Beck, in concert with Artistic Directors Jessica Kubzansky and Michael Michetti, the New Play Reading Festival is a key component of Boston Court’s commitment to nurturing playwrights and new work, and continues the company’s core mission of developing and programming works that are inherently theatrical, textually rich, and visually arresting.
Over the 13-year history of the New Play Reading Festival, over 30% of the plays selected have gone on to a full main-stage production at Boston Court in a future season.

Before submitting, playwrights are advised to read the Boston Court Performing Arts Center mission statement, current season and production history to determine if your work is appropriate for The Theatre @ Boston Court. For more information, visit bostoncourt.com
“We opened up submissions for our New Play Reading Festival specifically to LA playwrights for the first time last year, and we were blown away not just by the number of scripts we received, but by the rich, evocative, imaginative content,” said Emilie Beck, Literary Manager for The Theatre @ Boston Court. “Our city is home to many exceptional writers — playwrights who represent the culture of Los Angeles while pushing the boundaries of dramatic form. We’re thrilled to continue to forge relationships with local artists who deserve national recognition.”

The New Play Reading Festival is comprised of play readings and panel discussions, which are anticipated to take place in late-July 2018 in the 99-seat Main Stage and 80-seat Marjorie Branson Performance Space at Boston Court Performing Arts Center in Pasadena, CA.
Theatre offerings for Theatre @ Boston Court’s 2018 season include a bold, modern retelling of one of the most famous plays of the past century, A Streetcar Named Desire (February 15 – March 25, 2018) helmed by Artistic Director Michael Michetti;  the West Coast premiere of first generation Nigerian-American playwright Mfoniso Udofia’s Her Portmanteau (May 24 – June 30) directed by Gregg T. Daniel; and the world premiere of Everything That Never Happened (September 27 – November 4) by Sarah B. Mantell and directed by Artistic Director Jessica Kubzansky .

General Guidelines:

-We strongly suggest you submit plays with casts of seven, or fewer, roles

-We look for work that is one or more of the following:

-Non-linear

-Non-naturalistic

-Highly stylized

-Linguistically daring

-We especially look for work that represents the racial, ethnic, and gender diversity of the world

-We do not consider one-acts or children’s/youth plays

-All submissions must be sent through Submittable.  We do not accept submissions via US -Mail or any other alternate delivery service

-We do not accept re-submissions

-Response time within six months
