“Celebrate the Arts” is a FREE community event Oct. 7, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m and Oct. 8, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., sponsored by the Monrovia Association of Fine Arts (MAFA) and featuring more than 40 local artists in beautiful Monrovia Library Park.

The Featured Artist is photographer Michael Herdering, known for his soaring landscapes and fine images of native hummingbirds in flight, hence the theme he chose for the event: “Art Takes Flight.”

There’ll be fine art displays, sales, and demonstrations from MAFA Member Artists including painting, photography, mixed media, jewelry, ceramics, graphic arts, textiles, leather.

Monrovia’s third ChalkFest will amaze onlookers and award a $500 top cash prize on the sidewalk in front of the Library.

The Kids Art Activity will be decorating a used car with nontoxic paint, sponsored by Volunteer Center of San Gabriel Valley. Student / Youth Art and Demonstrations will include Monrovia High School ceramics students with Mr. Sal Perez, MHS Art Teacher and art students from Azusa Pacific University.

The family fun continues with hayrides each day from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm, starting out at the corner of Myrtle and Lime Avenues (near the Mark Twain statue). Rides will be $2 per person.

The public is invited to MAFA’s Community Arts Award Presentation on Oct 7 at 11:30 am on our stage at the library entrance featuring Mayor Pro Tem Gloria Crudgington, City Manager Oliver Chi and Councilmember Becky Shevlin as well as MAFA board members. “My husband and I are big fans of MAFA and this event,” remarks Ms. Crudginton. “We have attended and purchased art work for our home every year since we moved here.”

Award recipients will include Renaissance Award Winner Darrell Brooke and Heart in the Arts Award Winner Frank Zgonc. “The arts are vital to the emotional health and well-being of Monrovia,” says Mr. Brooke.

“They bring us together as a community.  As a resident of Monrovia for the past 19 years and a business owner for the past 6 years, I have seen positive change in this community, directly related to the arts movement. The Celebrate the Arts Show and ChalkFest carry out MAFA’s stated mission – giving fledgling artists with exposure in our community for their work, and providing our children with Arts activities during this weekend event.”

Continuous live musical entertainment will include Wild Mountain Mystics, The Lance & Gary Show, Locke Brothers & Others, Tim Tedrow & John Michel Kaye and Celtish

An OktoberFest Beer Garden sponsored by Lagunitas Brewing Company Community Grant Program will benefit the arts and art education in Monrovia and the region. Food trucks available at the event will include White Rabbit Philippino Fusion, Dulce Europa Shaved Ice and Mandoline Grill.

The Friends of the Monrovia Public Library will hold a book sale and local non-profit groups’ booths will include Fellowship Monrovia, Monrovia Garden Club, Monrovia Rock Hounds, Monrovia Historic Preservation Group, Monrovia Historical Museum and Relay for Life. A Silent Auction of donated art will benefit the arts and art education in Monrovia and throughout the San Gabriel Valley

Event sponsors include Title Sponsor Darrell G. Brooke, Esq. as well as Volunteer Center of San Gabriel Valley, Fellowship Monrovia, Chris Shevlin/Chicago Title, Brian Huffman Photography, Paint ‘n’ Play Studio, and the City of Monrovia.
