The Monrovia Wildcats Varsity football team has struggled greatly so far in 2017. In Head Coach Jerry Chou’s second season at Monrovia High School, the Wildcats have lost in a number of ways. In their first game on Aug. 25, the offense struggled greatly, scoring only eight points in a loss to Burbank. One week later, the offense shined, but the defense faltered, giving up 42 in a loss to La Salle. After only losing by two points in week two, the Wildcats were twice beaten handily, losing by 29 to Don Lugo and 21 to Whitter.
Last Friday, the Wildcats took on Damien High School. The Spartans entered the game with a strong 3-1 record and left the stadium with a fourth win under their belt. Monrovia again struggled to play a complete game, and for the third week in a row, they were beaten badly. The final score was 49-7 Damien.
For Monrovia, many might think they are in a position that is uncommon to them. In recent years, Monrovia has been a strong program. Former Coach Ryan Maddox coached the Wildcats for six seasons, winning three CIF Championships before departing in 2014. However, recently, the Wildcats have seen early struggles quickly turn into success. Just last season, Monrovia started 0-3, but won six of their next seven to make the playoffs. Coach Chou is looking for a similar turnaround this season.
