The Tournament of Roses invited applicants from the greater Pasadena area to become a part of history in the search for the 2018 Royal Court and the 100th Rose Queen® this past weekend.

Always a fun day for the young women, but also for some men it was a mild protest. In one case, James from La Salle High School told Pasadena Independent that he entered as a protest of what he called the sexist beauty pageant and antiquated Rose Parade.  James said it was time at the Tournament gave men a chance.  Who knows, the 100th Queen, could in fact be a King, a friend joked.

Young women who meet the eligibility requirements are selected based upon a combination of qualities, including public speaking ability, poise, academic achievement, youth leadership, and community and school involvement.

Seven young women will be named to the 2018 Royal Court on Oct. 2, 2017and one will be crowned the 100th Rose Queen on Oct. 18, 2017.

The Tournament of Roses assigns each participant a number to prevent bias and maintain anonymity.
