Wendelin Van Draanen, who was raised here in Monrovia, is returning on Monday Sept.11 to the Monrovia Public Library to speak from 7 p.m. – 8 p.m. She will be discussing her career and her latest book, “Wild Bird,” which is aimed at young adults.

In speaking with Wendelin, she reminded me that she and this writer had graduated from Monrovia High School together and taken German together during our high school years. Her memory was much clearer than mine.

She did indicate that she would be speaking, not just about her current book, but also growing up here in town. “I want to make my remarks as brief as possible and then allow people to ask questions of me,” she said.

“I also hope to talk to people about writing their own books and hope to encourage them to do that,” she added.

Van Draanen is taking time out to come to Monrovia from the book tour for “Wild Bird.” This new book focuses a teen forced into wilderness therapy camp after falling in with the wrong crowd. Her books will be available for purchase on Monday. This will be a chance to get a signed copy of the book.
