Last Saturday’s narrated tour of the Keefer Oak Grove and Ocean View Subdivisions was sold out. There are still a few tickets left for the August 26 tour of the Southeast Quarter and the September 23 tour of the Southwest Quarter. As there is space for only 14 people on each tour, it is an intimate look at the different sections of the city with City Historian Steve Baker.
The Southeast Tour will feature the historic homes of Wildrose, the City’s first Historic District, the location of the old Monrovia airport, the Monrovia Plunge (now the home of the Monrovia Historical Museum), Live Oak Cemetery, Shiloh AME Zion, Second Baptist and Immaculate Conception Churches, and the former Huntington Elementary School (now the site of the Early Childhood Learning Center and the Monrovia Unified School District Offices). You will also hear the stories of the Jones Family and of John Isaac Wesley Fisher, blacksmith and ferrier.
The Tour of the Southwest Quarter will include Monrovia High School, Mayflower Village (formerly “Cowtown” – some of us still remember Mountain View Dairy with its returnable glass milk bottles), the historic Santa Fe Depot, and Monroe School (my alma mater and the site of the first public school in the community – although the current buildings do not date back to that original school). This tour will also include “Monrovia’s panhandle” and the water well.
Tickets are $50 per person per tour, or $40 for Monrovia Historical Society members. Tickets are available at the Community Center. All proceeds will go to the Monrovia Historical Society to help us preserve and share the City’s history.
Baker’s tours are always lively and informative. They are also fun. Be sure to get your tickets soon, as the next tours are bound to sell out as well.
