Old Town Monrovia: Feeling Like Summer
Street fair gets to stay up late for the summer
It is feeling like summer out in Old Town Monrovia. Just like children out of school for the summer, the Monrovia Street Fair will get to stay up late this summer. Given that the days are staying light later. The Friday Night Street Fair will be open until 10 p.m. instead of the usual 9 p.m. This will allow more time for shopping, dining and just generally enjoying the Old Town.
According to one merchant who attended the Mayor’s Old Town Advisory Board meeting on Tuesday morning, Tine Cherry, the city’s Director of Public Services, announced that the plans to move the location of the street fair to Library Park have been placed on hold. She also told the merchant’s association that there would be meetings scheduled with the merchants to allow for their input regarding any such move.
There will be music in old town
To continue that feeling like summer vibe, Old Town Monrovia will have music. City Manager Oliver Chi, in his weekly update this week, announced that at the request of MOTAB, the city has investigated options regarding music in Old Town. For some time, live music has been provided by Lance and Gary on Wednesday and Saturday evenings. As Chi noted, the duo “is well-liked and talented, however, the Monrovia Old Town Advisory Board requested that staff research alternative options to add to our listing of performers.”
He wrote that the merchants had requested this as they wanted “various artists, different types of music, and alternative locations to showcase the music.”
MOTAB is developing a partnership with the music program at Citrus College. According to Chi’s report, this will give MOTAB access to a variety of performers and keep the cost low.
There will be two performers every Wednesday and Saturday through September 2nd. The live performances will begin on each of those nights at 6 p.m. and will last until 8 p.m.
The performers will rotate through six locations in Old Town. Those locations are the Southeast corner of Myrtle and Foothill by Coffee Bean Tea Leaf, the Northwest corner of Myrtle and Lime by the Drinking Fountain in Library Park, the West side of the 400 block of Myrtle near the mid-block walkway to the parking area behind the shops on Myrtle. the West Side of the 500 Block of Myrtle, again near the walkway to the parking in the rear, the east side of the 600 block of Myrtle, once more near the walkway to the rear of the buildings, and finally, the open area at the southeast corner of Myrtle and Olive near The Paragon.
This is not the only music in Old Town. Every Friday night Jennifer Ranger’s Kattywompus Band plays in front of the Dollmakers’ Kattywompus on the east side of Myrtle Avenue just south of the Krikorian. Their performance starts at 8 p.m. and plays until approximately 10 p.m. depending on the crowds.
In addition, according to Dollmaker, Pam Fitzpatrick, Lance (of Lance and Gary) will be performing in front of the shop on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. for the next several months.
