During this year’s Arcadia Rotary Club’s annual, they tipped the Hat to one very special individual and emcee George Fasching went the extra mile and even did a dance following his brief video of some classic dance movies he wanted to share with the huge crowd at the Community Center Tuesday afternoon.

Mayor Peter Amundson declared May 9 Senior Citizen Day and bestowed the highly-coveted Senior Citizen of the Year Award to long-time teacher and Arcadia volunteer Joyce Platt.

Platt has served on numerous committees and boards such as the Arcadia Travelers; Arcadia Senior Citizens’ Commission; The Gilb Museum, Floretta Lauber Museum Education Center as well as the Performing Arts Center to name a few. Platt first introduced the audience to her husband and 103 year-old-father as well as the other members at her table who represented each one of the committees she has served on.

Mayor Amundson quipped that the slogan used during his campaign was “Make Arcadia Great Again” and that former Mayor George Fasching’s campaign mantra was ‘Making Arcadia Clean Again, One Car at a Time…”

With the Mayor’s respectful apologies to Fritz Coleman for stealing one of his Jokes the program continued when the car wash guru got the mic back and opened an umbrella … as he introduced the main event. NBC Television’s Weather/Funny man took the spotlight for one of his stand-up routines which, of course, brought the house down.

It was a veritable who’s who of Arcadia at Tuesday’s gala luncheon including former State Senator Bob Margett, the entire City Council of Arcadia, Rosie Mares, President Arcadia Rotary, and Dorothy Denne, well-known former columnist for this newspaper. Approximately 350 people attended the Arcadia Rotary Club’s annual salute to seniors.
