Pasadena Independent has learned that there have been multiple assaults and robberies on and off campus at Caltech the nights of April 28 and 29.

An email sent to Caltech community at large reads, “ Pasadena Police Department said the description of the suspects is as follows: Three to four African-American males, 16-to-20 years old, estimated to be 5 ft. 10 inches to 6 ft. tall, medium weight. The vehicles used in these assaults have been described as sedans, one possibly a white Mercedes, and the other black or possibly dark red in color. There have been eight such incidents in recent nights, four of them near Caltech’s campus, and four of the victims have been affiliated with Caltech. In each case, the suspects have targeted individuals walking alone in a dark or secluded area, have physically attacked them, taken their personal possessions, and quickly fled in their vehicles.
Unfortunately, the persons responsible for these attacks are still at large.

According to an email Pasadena Independent obtained {send to Caltech staff and students} by William Heim, Director of Security Operations stated “We are taking every precaution to ensure the safety of the campus until the situation is resolved. We are working closely with Pasadena Police Department on this matter, and have increased both foot and vehicle security patrols, as well as the number of security escorts available to the Caltech community.” We ask for your help in making the campus as safe as possible by the taking the following steps:

-Do not walk alone on or around campus after dark. Call x4701 for a security escort if necessary.
-Always be aware of your surroundings and the people around you, day and night.
Trust your instincts.

-If someone or something makes you feel uneasy, get out or get away.
-If you feel you are being followed, move to a well populated or lighted area or building.
-If you need emergency help, call x5000 on campus (626) 395-5000 if you are off campus), or call 911.
