Monrovia Defeats Muir 10 – 7 in a Hitting Frenzy

The Wildcat’s and Mustangs both have another game in the Dave Moore Tourney on Thursday, March 9th @ 3:15. Monrovia will face Pasadena High School; Muir will square off against Baldwin Park

The Monrovia Wildcats faced off against the Muir Mustangs in the teams 2nd game of the 2017 Dave Moore Tourney. Both the Mustangs and Wildcats dropped their first games on Tuesday and were searching for their first win of the Tournament.

Starting for the Monrovia Wildcats was Josh Delgado (#5) who pitched three innings recording four hits, six runs, three walks and five strikeouts. The Mustangs started off hot against Delgado as they racked up three quick runs in the top of the first inning. Their lead was short lived as the Wildcats answered right back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first. The Mustangs starter was Jesse Zarazua who finished the night with four innings pitched, nine hits, 6 runs, four earned runs, four walks and three strikeouts.

A Muir Mustang slides headfirst into third Base

Monrovia jumped out to a three run lead of their own in the second inning as the Wildcats continued their hot streak at the plate. The Mustangs found their swing in the fourth inning causing Monrovia’s Head Coach, Brad Blackmore, to turn to his second pitcher of the night, Chandler Gorman (#12). Gorman took over the mound with runners on first and third and closed out the fourth at six a piece, heading in the fifth inning tied up.

Gorman (1.2 innings, two hits, one run, one earned run, one walk and one strikeout) came back out on to the mound to start the fifth but was pulled when he found himself left with two outs and bases loaded with the score still tied at six. Monrovia turned to their ace, Patrick Goebel (#24), to get their last out of the fifth inning but a soft hit ground ball between third and short resulted in a score for the Mustangs and the lead (7-6). Goebel struck out the next batter.

Monrovia’s Chandler Gorman (#12) winds up as a Muir Mustang heads attempts to steal second

The Mustangs took the field with relief pitcher Valente Vera (#22) in hopes of maintaining their lead. However, Monrovia had other ideas, as they racked up their third, three run inning of the game and rode their way to a 10-7 victory.

Patrick Goebel earned the win pitching a total of 2.1 innings with 0 hits. 0 runs, 0 earned runs, 0 walks and six strikeouts. Goebel also went two for two from the plate, earning an RBI and two hits.

The Monrovia Wildcats, as a team, had a .536 batting average with 15 hits and 8 RBIs. The stars at the plate were: G. Arellano: three for four with 3 RBIs on 2 Hits and 1 walk, J. Gomeztrejo: three for three with 1 RBI on 3 hits and 1 walk and Jayden Scott (#27) who went three for three with 1 RBI on 3 hits and a walk.

Patrick Goebel (#24) winds up for his 4th strikeout

The Muir Mustangs finished with a batting percentage of .233 and recorded 7 hits with 5 RBIs. Their most efficient hitters were Jesse Zarazua who went two for three with 2 hits and RBI and a 1 walk also Kevin Torres who hit two for four with two hits and an RBI.
