National Cabbage Day deserves flowers? Pam didn’t think so; she looked at Google to find the answer!

I was having my usual Old Town breakfast last week when a very happy friend stopped by my table and asked me if I knew what was going on up at Library Park. My immediate thoughts of “oh no…” turned to “how lovely…” when my friend told me she had been given a flower along with a message of “have a nice day.” Now, I knew it was National Cabbage Day (but that hardly deserved a flower distribution….), so with the help of Google I learned it was also National Random Acts of Kindness Day. Unfortunately, Google didn’t know the name of the friendly neighbors spreading the love, so hope they read this column as I offer my “thanks,” and have a nice day!
It’s time to give another shout out to our Old Town supporters, The Lance and Gary Show. Many of you know these two guys from Wednesday’s in Old Town and Saturday night’s music. Well, besides being musically inclined, Lance Cosgrove is an accomplished videographer and has donated his time and expertise on several occasions to promote Old Town. His last creation was a promotional piece for one of my favorite Old Town businesses, Oh Mulberry Bush (located in the west 400 block walkway between Merengue and Paradis Ice Cream). News Flash! We have a new retailer coming to Old Town! The City tells me Rubies & Pearls just applied for a business license at 511 S. Myrtle (west side of the street where Resistor Records used to be). I’m not sure if the name is actually “Ruby’s & Pearl’s” (as in, two names), or simply “Rubies & Pearls.” At any rate, I understand the shop will sell women’s clothing, accessories and shoes. I’m trying to find out an opening date…
As I was walking around town this morning, I was reading the posted signs in windows and thought I should share a couple of fun things. First, did you realize that Mundial (500 block, east side) has a Wine Tasting Party every 3rd Thursday of the month? I know my friend, Donna Baker (Teles Properties) is a frequent customer for the “5 Wines, $15 per Person” event from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and she gives it rave reviews! I also noticed that Seasoning Alley (100 block S. Myrtle, east side) has added some great beers to their menu. And – every single day (that they are open), Mikomi (500 block S. Myrtle, west side) has an extra-early Happy Hour from 2:30 to 6 p.m. So many choices, so little time…
I have to give a shout out to Fire Engineer Ernie Moreno: Ernie recently was presented with the “Martin Luther King Lifetime of Service” Drum Major Award for his life-long dedication to community service and volunteer efforts. Old Town Monrovia has known our Ernie for years as the moving force behind the “Spark of Love” Toy Drive during the holidays. Who can forget that huge red fire truck parked in the loading zone in front of the Krikorian Theater the weekend after Thanksgiving? Many, many toys have been collected due to Ernie’s dedication along with his fellow fire fighters. Thank you, Ernie Moreno – you’re our hero!
Coming soon: the 2017 St. Baldrick’s Day “Fuzz Fest,” an event designed to raise funds for childhood cancer research. Last year’s event, the first in Monrovia, was a smashing success, and we’re hoping for even more participation and donations this year. Local Old Town Merchants will be honoring “Fuzz Fest” vouchers between March 1st and March 17th, giving back 20 percent of each voucher sale to the cause. At the very least, come watch your friends get their heads shaved during Monrovia Street Fair on Friday, March 17!
