Monrovia-Duarte Black Alumni Association Sponsors Black History Month Activities

The Monrovia Duarte Black Alumni Association have several events planned for Black History Month. While several of these events have already occurred a great deal more are still ahead.

On Feb. 10, Monrovia High School graduate, Ron Husband will speak to an Advance Placement Art Class. Husband is a retired Disney animator. There will also be a panel discussion at a high school assembly that will also feature actor Sinqua Walls, and USC Professor Tim Conley.

On Saturday, Feb. 11, the student art show will be held at Bradoaks Elementary School. See related story on mbdaa.org.

Next Wednesday, Feb. 15 , will see a program at the Monrovia Public Library: “Inspiring Families to Community Service and Social Action.”  Adults and children are invited to “Epxerience diversity in children’s books and be inspired into service.” It will offer opportunities for parents to share great books with their children.  The workshop will be conducted from 3:30 p.m. to 5:50 p.m. at the Library, 321 S. Myrtle Ave.

The next day, Feb, 16, there will be an assembly at Santa Fe Middle School, featuring Wayne Nunnely, a Monrovia High graduate and former NFL football coach.  On Thursday, Feb. 23, there will be another event aimed at middle school students, a Black History Month movie night at Santa Fe Middle School. The movie, “Glory Road,” will be shown starting at 6 p.m. The final middle school event will be the showing another movie, this time, “Radio.” This movie will be shown on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at Clifton Middle School starting at 6 p.m.

Saturday Feb. 18 will see not one, but two special events at the Monrovia Public Library. Monrovia High School Graduate, Joannie Gholar Yuille, and her husband James will be sharing Family Story Time and Crafts starting at Noon in the Cozy Book area. Their presentation will be followed at 1 p.m. by one from Ron Husband, the retired Disney animator.

A Soul Food Luncheon will be held on Saturday, Feb. 25, at the Community Center. Tickets are $20. The guest speakers will be Tim Conley and Ron Husband. There will be entertainment, door prizes and raffles. Reservation should be made at mdbaa.bhm@gmail.com.
