Two Arcadia Apaches rise up for the block.

Even on the road, it didn’t take long for Arcadia to handle the Mustangs. Sitting most of their starters throughout the match, the Arcadia Apaches (15-1, 8-0 in league play) beat the Muir Mustangs (2-13, 0-9) (25-7, 25-14, 25-9) Thursday afternoon in Pasadena.
The best performances of the match came from Apache’s senior Isabel Yang (#20), who tallied nine kills and four aces, and senior Michele Convey (#18), who got five kills and defended strongly at the net. Arcadia coach Chuck Freberg was pleased with his team’s effort and highlighted his players’ ability to apply new strategies late in the season. “Normally it’ll take six weeks for somebody to incorporate new information,” he said, “but these guys have pretty good skills … so they’ve been able to adapt pretty well.”
The Mustangs, who haven’t won a league game in three seasons, improved greatly since their drubbing at Arcadia on Sept.13. Muir coach Jamarko Washington praised his team’s performance: “We can hang with them … they really competed, they didn’t give up, and they pushed to the end.” The Mustangs got three kills, two aces, and a block from senior Emon Davis, whose powerful attacks inspired audible gasps from the home crowd in the second set. “She’s probably one of the best hitters in our league,” said Washington.
Muir couldn’t get much else going, however, as Arcadia maintained their top position in the Pacific League. The Apaches go on the road against Pasadena next Tuesday at 3:30pP.m., while Muir heads to Burbank at the same time.
