Dumpling & Beer Fest (Sept. 29 @ 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., San Gabriel Mission Playhouse, 320 S. Mission Drive). Join us for San Gabriel’s local twist on Oktoberfest! The San Gabriel Dumpling & Beer Fest will feature dumpling vendors and craft beer tastings in the city’s historic Mission District, plus live entertainment from Cold Duck Band and two DJs. In 2015, the inaugural festival was a massive success and was the most well-attended city event in recent memory. This year, the festival promises to be even better, with improvements made based on lessons learned from the first festival. This year there will be 17 food vendors and, for beer lovers, there will be more than 16 craft brews on tap from breweries. Admission into the festival is free. Don’t miss the 29^th Annual Fire Prevention Festival and Open House, presented by the Sierra Madre Fire Department. There will be a variety of exhibits and displays at the festival, such as emergency medical/firefighting equipment and earthquake preparedness and home fire safety information. There will also be representatives from Sierra Madre Police Department, Sierra Madre CERT, Sierra Madre Search and Rescue, US Forest Service, Sierra Madre Public Works, Post Alarm, and others, to answer any safety questions you might have. There will be hot dogs, popcorn, coloring books, and badges for all of the children who attend. There will also be a coloring contest with prizes and a bounce house.

In-N-Out Cover to Cover Reading Program (Oct. 2 @ 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Altadena Library, 600 E. Mariposa St.). The annual In-N-Out reading program will begin Saturday Oct. 1 and will run through Nov. 12. Children ages 4 to 12 can check out and read five library books and receive a certificate for a free hamburger or cheeseburger (you may substitute for a grilled cheese) from In-N-Out Burger!
