Monrovia Celebrates Its Unique Zip Code on 9/10/16
Monrovia has an unusual zip code. It reads the same way right side up as upside down. Sure there are a dozen other such codes (think 10001 or 60009, etc.), but Monrovians will be able to celebrate their zip code on its own day in a few weeks.
On Sept. 10, 2016, the whole town is invited to celebrate the day, after all it will be 9/10/16 … 91016.
In order to highlight the celebration, the Monrovia Public Library is holding a special Postcard Contest. Anyone of any age is welcome to create a Monrovia Postcard. The library will even furnish blank postcards with the finished cards due back this Saturday, Sept. 3.
Judges will select the first, second, and third place winners, with the winner being announced on the day of the event. Library staff will have all the cards postmarked by our postmaster with a very special commemorative stamp and sent back to each participant’s residence.
On Sept. 10, Mayor Tom Adams will kick off the celebration at 11 a.m. in Library Park. Local non-profits will be on hand with fun activities for the kids (and kids can be of any age). There will also be art opportunities, lots of handouts, and even free hot dogs (the latter courtesy of Athens Services).
There will also be a community photo taken by Shane Nichols at 1:30 p.m. in front of the fountain in Library Park. This should be especially entertaining as the photo will be taken from a drone.
There are commemorative Zip Code Day items available for purchase online including t-shirts, mugs, water bottles, hats, etc. For more information, go to http://fspdesigns.com/zipcodeday.
The Monrovia Chamber of Commerce will have a unique Monrovia postcard available to the first 300 people who visit their booth at the festivities.
