For the past few months, the Directly Elected Mayor Advisory Review Committee has been looking into the issue of how Monrovia selects its mayor.

The question is whether it should be done by directly electing the mayor, as the city does now, or to return to rotating the mayor between the various council members, as most communities of Monrovia’s size do.

Next Tuesday, at the regular city council meeting, the committee will present its findings to the council. The existing council will then have an opportunity to discuss the issue.

This presentation comes after a long process of outreach to the community, with several presentations to various groups and three very poorly-attended public meetings hosted by the city. There was also an online survey on the city’s website.
