Sheriff’s Homicide Detectives Continue to Investigate Circumstances Surrounding a Shooting That Left One Man Injured and a Little Boy Dead

Detectives learned that at approximately 10:30 p.m., on July 5 a drive-by shooting occurred in the 300 block of Figueroa Drive in Altadena. An unknown suspect drove up to the residence and fired rounds toward a residence, striking both victims whom were on the porch.

The adult victim, male-Black, 27, and the boy, male-Hispanic, 4, were transported to a local hospital. Unfortunately, the boy was later pronounced dead.

The adult victim was a family friend visiting the residents and is not related to the child.

The suspect, described only as an adult male-Black, was driving a dark-colored or black car. It is unknown if there are any additional suspects or if this incident was gang related.

The investigation is active and ongoing.

According to a sheriff’s statement, the gunman drove up to a home in the 300 block of Figueroa Drive, just east of the Foothill (210) Freeway, at 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday evening and opened fire. Both of the victims, who were sitting on the porch of the home, were struck, it said.

The victims were discovered by a deputy about 10:50 p.m. said Sheriff’s Deputy Trina Schrader. Both were taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, according to a deputy at the sheriff’s Altadena Station.

The boy, identified as Salvador Esparza III, was later pronounced dead.

The man – who deputies described as a family friend not related to the child – remained hospitalized with injuries.

At least 13 rounds were fired, according to reports from the scene.
