The Linked Learning Alliance recently announced that a high school senior graduating from Pasadena High School (PHS) is the recipient of the Linked Learning Scholarship 2016. This is the first year the Linked Learning Scholarship is being awarded.

The Linked Learning Scholarship recipient is Ricardo Solis-Cuevas, a recent graduate from PHS, where he participated in the Law & Public Service pathway. Ricardo is on the Pasadena High Honor Roll and completed an internship aligned with his course of study at the Pasadena Ronald McDonald House. He plans on attending California State University, Los Angeles, and would like to pursue a major in sociology.

“The Law & Public Service Pathway has helped shaped me to be the person I am today. Having started this pathway when I entered high school, I had the opportunity to bond and grow with my peers,” said Solis-Cuevas. “The pathway has truly helped me to discover what I enjoy doing and what I want to do in life. I learned how much of a giving person I am that I want to pursue a career that will allow me to give back to my community.”

Solis-Cuevas will receive a $1,000 one-time scholarship to help cover college expenses. Linked Learning Scholarship winners are selected based on academic achievement and accomplishments in a student’s Linked Learning pathway, financial need, persistence, and leadership. In addition, all applicants must have completed an internship aligned with their course of study and be nominated by both a high school teacher in their Linked Learning pathway and a supervisor from their Linked Learning work-based learning experience.

“We are proud to award the inaugural Linked Learning Scholarship to Ricardo Solis-Cuevas,” said Christopher Cabaldon, president of the Linked Learning Alliance. “His Linked Learning experience in the Law & Public Service pathway has helped him gain 21st century skills that will help him continue his trajectory of success in college and throughout his career.”

The opportunity to apply for the Linked Learning Scholarship is only available to students in Linked Learning pathways that are registered on The Link, a quality assurance and support platform that is under development to encourage high quality Linked Learning practice.

When fully built out, the Link will be a certification tool for the Linked Learning field to support and provide recognition of continuous improvement and progress toward preparing all students for college, career, and life.

“I am delighted that Pasadena Unified registered their Linked Learning pathways on The Link. Districts that are registered and can show evidence of high quality practice and positive student outcomes will be eligible to access benefits and opportunities for their Linked Learning students who demonstrate college and career ready skills. I encourage any district that offers career pathways to register on The Link so their students can be eligible to apply for the Linked Learning Scholarship and benefit from other opportunities,” Cabaldon added.
