If there is something LA will never have enough of, it’s a solid taco spot. Newly opened Chicas Tacos however, not only serves a variety of loaded (and we mean loaded to the point where there’s a flaco option) tacos but the Baja-style joint also brings a vacation element into our mouths. So what makes Chicas Tacos a standout? Their mission to use only top-tier ingredients like local, organic veggies, wild caught fish and free range chicken – staying away from anything frozen.
The tacos themselves are nothing short of amazing; the pork taco has a slight crunchiness to it from the Chicharrones dusted on top, the peppered steak taco features crispy potatoes, the beer battered fish is impossibly juicy and the chicken taco is topped with a fresh Baja Med salad. Of course, all LA hot spots have a veggie option and Chicas Tacos is no different. The cauliflower chorizo taco with marinated mushrooms, panela cheese, avocado sauce, and chile toreado hits the spot while salads such as the Baja Med, which is perfectly dressed in tahini lime vinaigrette, keeps those looking for a lighter option satisfied.
Taco joints without aguas frescas is equivalent to coffee spots without wifi. What’s the deal? Thankfully, Chicas has an artful curation of flavors such as lavender cantaloupe, watermelon cinnamon, cucumber lime mint and other seasonal flavors. Plus, Horchata.
Just like the Aguas Frescas, what is a taco place sans the salsas? Chica’s has six colorful and flavorful salsas ranging from mild to hot. The molcajete and morita salsa are for those sensitive to the heat while the roasted and raw tomatillo are for those looking for more edge. Leave the habanero and pequin salsas to the pros though, they are pure fuego.
