On Tuesday, May 24, the Monrovia Wildcats faced off against Ganesha in the second round of the CIF Playoffs.

Patrick Goebel threw another fantastic game against Ganesha, tallying 6 innings pitched, 10 strikeouts, 4 hits, 1 walk, and 0 runs.

The Monrovia Wildcats will now face the Tahquitz Titans at home on Friday, May 27, at 3:15 p.m.

The Wildcats have now had two consecutive shutouts in the first and second round of the CIF playoffs.

Last week, Monrovia’s Isaiah Ramos started against Campbell Hall and threw 5 innings with 1 hit, 4 strikeouts, 5 walks, and 0 runs.

Goebel threw the final two innings with 1 hit, 3 strikeouts, 1 walk, and no runs.

This duo has proven to be recipe for success, along with fantastic hitting and fielding from their supporting Wildcats. Together, Ramos and Goebel have a combined record of 16-3 with 22 starts (11 each) and an earned run average of .82.

Goebel, a junior, who sustained a foot injury early in the year and has been cleared to play, however Coach Blackmore believes he is more valuable on the mound. It is clear to see the pitcher’s limp as he takes the walk to the mound but he does not let it affect his ability to field. It is like watching Curt Schilling in 2004, minus the bloody sock.

Isaiah Ramos, the outspoken leader of the wildcats, has been having a fantastic senior year both on the mound and in the outfield. If you watch the Wildcat’s dugout shortly before they take the field, you can hear Ramos scream “Line it up!” Isaiah proceeds to go down the line of his team mates and do, what I like to call, “The Bro Hug.” Hey, if it helps you win, keep doing it.

Needless to say, these two have been the backbone of the Wildcat’s great run this season and in CIF. If you ask either Ramos or Goebel how they manage to pitch a strong game, they never hesitate to give accolades to their teammates for their superb play in the field and at the plate.

It is rumored that Ramos will take the mound on Friday, May 27, against Tahquitz who went 11-4 in league and beat Sierra Vista in a high-scoring 9-8 win on Tuesday, May 24. Let us see if the “One, Two Punch” lands another knockout.

EDITS:
Original: “has been cleared to pitch but not bat, has only registered seven at-bats all year.”
Correction: “has been cleared to play, however Coach Blackmore believes he is more valuable on the mound.”
OMITS: (Regarding Goebel at bats) – “seven plate appearances all year” – this was an inaccurate statement. Coach Blackmore said he has only had two at bats.
