The Los Angeles County Commission for Women, whose efforts educate, motivate, and inspire women, recently celebrated its 31st Annual “Women of the Year” awards event. Recipients were recognized and honored for their outstanding commitment in areas of service with regard to women’s issues relating to equality, health education, the arts, and violence on women. The event was held in the grand hall of the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion in downtown Los Angeles with over 400 guests, dignitaries, and the media present.
Each honoree was heralded for her contributions to improve the lives of women in LA County and beyond. Among the 14 women receiving this honor was Lori Berg, artist and executive director of Foothills Pregnancy Resource Center, a local non-profit that has garnered local and national attention for its innovative programming and services.
Berg has served as director since 2009, and in that time the center has provided: free and confidential pregnancy tests; limited obstetric ultrasounds; options counseling; and supplies. The center also takes a unique approach to wrap-around care by providing healing after an abortion for both women and men; a weekly support group for women; monthly parenting classes and mentorships for men.
In addition to her work in the non-profit sector, Berg is an accomplished performer and teacher. A former Miss Illinois and reporter with NPR, she is a member of Actors’ Co-op of Hollywood; staff soloist for Forest Lawn; a teacher of performance arts throughout the greater LA area; a guest speaker; an on-camera host; and thrift shop diva.
