Much ado about nothing. The plastic bag ban will not go into effect in Arcadia anytime soon, city council decided Tuesday, May 3.
Mayor Tom Beck, who introduced the proposed ordinance in 2014, requested to table the item indefinitely, pending the outcome of a similar statewide referendum.
Los Angeles County banned single-use plastic bags in 2011, and neighboring cities of Pasadena, South Pasadena, Monrovia, and Glendale have enacted similar bans.
The proposed ordinance called for a ban on plastic bags distributed in grocery stores, convenience stores, and retail markets.
City Manager Dominic Lazzaretto said if the ordinance is re-introduced in the future, then the city would launch a new public outreach campaign.
