Arcadia High School Theatre Students Rank #1 at Shakespeare Competition!
Arcadia High School Theatre students won the First Place Sweepstakes Trophy for overall highest cumulative score at the annual Shakespeare Competition recently held at Carson High School. In this competition sponsored by the Drama Teachers’ Association of Southern California (DTASC), the Arcadia Theatre students outscored all 50 high schools competing that day, including all of the Los Angeles performing arts schools, by placing in every category:
– First place for Group Tragedy “MacBeth.”
– First place for Lesser Known Plays “Coriolanus.”
– Second place for Costumes.
– Second place for Monologues: “Romeo and Juliet,” “Merchant of Venice.”
– Third place for Sets/Lights/Graphics.
– Third place for Group Comedy “The Tempest.”
– Fifth place for Sibs From Another Crib “Julius Caesar.”
– Fifth place for Shakespeare the Musical “Much Ado About Nothing.”
– Honorable mention (top 10) for That Way Madness Lies “Twelfth Night.”
– Semi-finalist in Monologues: “Richard III,” “Romeo and Juliet.”
Arcadia Unified School District Assistant Superintendent Jeff Wilson offered this praise, “We are so proud of the dedication and commitment our students have demonstrated through their preparation, shows and competitions. The qualities these students have developed through involvement in the theatre department will certainly propel them forward into life in whatever career or field of study they choose to participate. Well done!”
At the end of an exciting day of comedic and dramatic performances and technical presentations Steven Volpe, Arcadia High School theatre director and teacher, remarked, “What a wonderful day of celebrating Shakespeare and the transformative power of theatre on students … so many life lessons learned. Congratulations to all!!” He went on to note that this year, the Arcadia High theatre students ranked first in the state in both the Fall and Shakespeare DTASC competitions. “We are so proud of our talented and hard-working drama and stagecraft students!”
