The Monrovia Historic Preservation Group (MOHPG) is presenting the 34th annual vintage home tour this Sunday, May 1, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. This is a change for the group which had held the tour for 30 years on Mother’s Day. The tour was moved to the first Sunday in May due to popular demand.

There will be five homes on this year’s tour this year. Perhaps the most famous is the Upton Sinclair Home, a Spanish Colonial Revival that has not only been landmarked in Monrovia, but is also on the National Register.

The other homes include an English Tudor Cottage, and three Craftsman, two of which were built by the Tifal Brothers, who built a number of homes in the Wild Rose Historic District. In addition to the Monrovia Historical Museum being open, the Anderson House Museum will return to the tour after an absence of five years.

The President of MOHPG, Jim Wigton, recommends purchasing tickets in advance of the tour in order to save money. To do so, anyone wishing to purchase tickets may go to the group’s website at www.mohpg.org to order using PayPal or a credit card. There are also three locations where tickets may be purchased in person – Dollmakers’ Kattywompus (412 S. Myrtle Ave.), the Monrovia Chamber of Commerce (620 S. Myrtle Ave.), and Curves, (1159 E. Huntington Drive in Duarte). Tickets will also be available at the MOHPG booth at the corner of Myrtle and Colorado during the Old Town Friday Festival tomorrow.

Advance tickets prices are: $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, and $10 for teens (12 and under admitted free). Day-of-tour tickets, which will only be sold at the Monrovia Historical Museum (742 E. Lemon Ave), are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors, and $15 for teens (12 and under admitted free). Will Call will also be located at the Historical Museum on tour day.

The tickets themselves will give the addresses of each of the homes on the tour as well as the two museums. They will also feature a map to the various locations. Start early to ensure seeing all the houses. Wigton recommends allowing at least four hours to see all the houses.

Complementary refreshments will be served at two of the homes.
