In an election season that has been amazingly vicious, it was refreshing to hear candidates for a particular office voicing support and praise for one another. Such was the case when the San Gabriel Valley Public Affairs Network held a forum for candidates for the 5th Supervisorial District seat current held my Michael Antonovich. The supervisor has held the seat since 1980 and is now being “termed out.”
Seven of the eight candidates for the officer were present at the forum. Each gave a brief overview of his or her background and outlines some of their concerns. Those present included: Kathryn Barger, Antonovich’s chief deputy; State Senator Bob Huff; Deputy District Attorney Elan Carr; sitting Los Angeles City Councilman Mitchell Englander; Glendale Mayor Ara Najarian; Altadena Town Council Member President Billy Malone; and educator Darrell Park. Rajpal Kahlon, who listed himself as a real estate investor on the ballot did not attend.
The tone for the entire luncheon forum was set early by Malone who said that during the course of the campaign he had begun to think of the others vying for the office as friends and pointed out that the electorate had what he called “a good selection of candidates.” Several other candidates echoed the same sentiment.
