TCUSD Remembers Cesar Chavez
On March 21, Emperor Elementary School welcomed Cesar L. Chavez, grandson of Cesar Chavez, founder and late leader of the United Farm Workers Union, to help celebrate Emperor’s third annual Cesar Chavez Day. With all-school assemblies, Emperor Eagles learned about Cesar Chavez’s life-long work advocating for social justice for farmworkers. Chavez spoke of his grandfather’s ability to bring fair wages and help to eradicate mistreatment of farmworkers.
Emperor introduced Chavez to Oak Avenue Intermediate School; and on March 21, Oak held two assemblies where Chavez talked to students about his grandfather’s life, all of the things he accomplished with only an eighth grade education, and how his grandfather was instrumental in getting rights for farmworkers and helping to get many dangerous pesticides banned. Chavez challenged Oak students to take advantage of their opportunities. March 31 is commemorated as Cesar Chavez Day to promote service to the community in honor of Cesar Chavez’s life and work. Everyone is urged to observe this day with appropriate service, community, and educational programs to honor Cesar Chavez’s enduring legacy.
