Rose City Alternative Education School Named 2016 Model Continuation High School

The Pasadena Unified School District announced that Rose City Alternative High School was honored as a 2016 Model Continuation High School by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson.
Rose City, just one of 37 schools across the state of California selected for this designation, was recognized for the innovative teaching approaches that enable students with diverse needs to complete their high school education. Principal Jack Loos of Rose City stated, “This award not only validates the support of all levels of leadership in PUSD for alternative education options, but acknowledges the great effort and commitment to excellence in a 21st century learning environment that staff and teachers at Rose City High School have created.”
On average Rose City has 240 students enrolled at any given time. Students are 16 years or older and are at risk of not graduating from high school for various reasons. The school offers three programs consisting of regular day, independent studies and twilight school. Instruction is flexible and based on individual student needs.
PUSD places a high value on education of the whole child and Rose City exemplifies this core belief by offering multiple school-based counseling and supports on site, including a Healthy Start Center, family resources and family engagement opportunities. What makes this alternative high school stand out is the strong focus on college and career readiness opportunities, family and student engagement events to celebrate student success, concurrent enrollment options with Pasadena City College and use of technology in daily learning.
“At Rose City, traditional education moves beyond the classroom and involves partners such as First Tee Golf Program, Pasadena Playhouse, Armory for the Arts, Kaiser Permanente and College Access Plan to name a few,” shared Board President Elizabeth Pomeroy. “We are fortunate to have the active participation of world class partners here in Pasadena as part of our educational offerings enriching the lives of our students inside and outside the classroom.”
Rose City students have garnered several awards for the Speech and Debate Team, and recently received honors from the White House recognizing the artistic contributions of Dalon Poole. “The accomplishments of our students are a reflection of the dedication of our teachers and administration of the school,” shared Superintendent Brian McDonald. “High expectations and the belief that all students can learn if we meet them where they are in their educational journey and life reaffirms the importance of offering high quality alternative education programs.”
