Station Square Status Update

By Susan Motander

The City is busy working to perfect the functionality of Monrovia’s Station Square. Among other things, the city is discussing expanding the parking structure with Metro and is studying is Old Town/Station Square Shuttle Service.

Members of the city staff met last week with representatives from Metro which now controls the Gold Line Station and the parking structure. The structure has 350 parking spots and is already 70% full during peak hours of operation. According to City Manager Oliver Chi, the city is concerned that with the increased overall usage of the area (with dining and other entertainment spots planned for the area) expanding the structure might be advisable before a problem arises.
City Manager Oliver Chi indicated that the initial discussion with Metro went well and that the city staff is now working to identify the various options available.
Regarding the Shuttle Service the city is providing between the Square and Old Town Monrovia: According to Chi’s recent weekly update, the service that is being provided every Friday and Saturday night from 5 – 10 p.m. has an average of 60-70 passengers a week. The cost is only $1, but is free for anyone presenting any Metro/Foothill Fare Tap Card, Pass or Transfer, etc. The city will continue to monitor the use of the shuttle for the next few months before making any changes to the schedule.
Lastly, don’t forget the Chamber of Commerce’s Station Square Craft Beer and Music Fest, April 16.
