State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson announced the awarding of $245 million to 265 applicants that integrate academics with career technical and professional training, connect employers with schools, and prepare students for jobs in high-demand fields, including robotics, information technology, health care, teaching, and emergency services. The awards are in addition to the $91 million granted to 100 applicants in March, bringing total grant funding to $336 million.
The Career Technical Education Incentive Grant program is the largest of its kind in the nation. Established in the 2015-16 state budget, the program will provide $900 million over the next three years to support and develop 21st century career and college readiness programs throughout the state.
“California’s Career Technical Education leads the way in providing our students with a rigorous academic education in addition to the practical job skills that are in the greatest demand,” Torlakson said. “At the same time, we’re providing businesses and our communities with a next-generation workforce needed to keep our economy thriving.”
The State Board of Education (SBE) today approved $245 million in Career Technical Education Incentive Grants to 265 applicants. The grants ranged in size from $28,562 to Southern Trinity Joint Unified School District in Trinity County to $32.5 million to the Los Angeles Unified School District. Today’s awards follow the $91 million granted to 100 applicants by the SBE in March.
