‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’ at Arcadia High School
By Jonathan Tsou
The 1960s were a Golden Age for Hollywood musicals. Arcadia High School’s award-winning theater students will be performing a ‘60s spring musical, “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” by Richard Morris. George Roy Hill directed this 1967 American musical film, and the film was nominated for five Golden Globes and seven Academy Awards.
“Thoroughly Modern Millie” is a fast-paced musical that tells the story of a young woman from Salina, Kansas, who moves to New York City. Her grand plan is to find a job as a secretary to a wealthy man and then attempt to marry him. However, her plan goes completely awry after finding out that the wealthy man she was supposed to meet is a kidnapper.
A couple of stagecraft students who have been preparing the stage for the performance hinted that there are backgrounds and clothing from the 1920s, including flapper dresses and bobbed haircuts.
Last summer, the Arcadia High School theater students received awards from the Drama Teachers Association of Southern California Fall Competition, or often known as DTASC. The students scored first in both in Costume Design and in Performance of an International Playwright.
This upcoming performance, “Thoroughly Modern Millie” will be directed by Steven Volpe and held in the Arcadia Performance Arts Center. It will take place on March 17 to 19. Tickets are for sales for $15 for normal seating and $30 for VIP Seating. Tickets can be found online on www.ArcadiaStage.com and also the local Arcadia Denny’s Restaurant.
