On Feb. 2, the First Avenue Middle School Spartans’ soccer team played at Santa Fe Middle School. The Santa Fe Middle School Cougars defeated the First Avenue Spartans 5-2. The Cougars scored an early goal and continued to roll through the game. The Spartans had numerous chances to score. However, throughout the match, they were unable to convert shots into goals.

The game not only marks the beginning of the middle school soccer season, but it also marks a new era for the First Avenue Spartans. This was the first time the Spartans had played a game of soccer in 20 years.  Previously, it was removed because 9th graders were sent to the high school instead of staying in the middle schools and, therefore, eliminating the need for sports in middle schools.

Although soccer has been reinstated back to the middle school, basketball and football have already been implemented. There are plans to add other sports such as badminton. Having sports in middle school not only allows students to be more active, but it also allows the high school to receive students with experience in a teamwork setting.

For more up to date information regarding middle school teams, you may visit the Arcadia Unified School District Facebook page and also specific middle school websites.
