The Arcadia High School (AHS) Constitution Team won the State Finals in Bakersfield last Saturday. The team will head to Washington, D.C., for the National Finals in April. The team effort was comprised of 30 students, teacher/leader Megan Leahy, and several volunteer coaches.

“I am incredibly lucky to teach such a fine group of young men and women. They have dedicated a large part of their senior year to this team. Watching them progress into the informed citizens they are today makes me very hopeful for the future. It is truly an honor to be their coach.

“The team is helped by other coaches including: Kevin Fox, Miriam Lopez, Mark Hong, Carl Nielsen, Bob Garrett, and Gary Kovacic,” said Megan Leahy.

The National Competition will take place in Washington, D.C., from April 22 to 25. They will participate in congressional style hearings tackling subjects such as gun control, birth right citizenship, and immigration.

The team consists of Eric Chen, Sydney Cheung, Michael Chien, Katie Chiou, Elaine Chung, Rohan Garg, Matt Hatfield, Joshua Jen, Kelsea Jeon, Nicole Kwan, Diana Lam, Hanah Lee, Emma Li, Vicky Lu, Malcolm Pithawalla, Breanna Qin, Isidro Santa Maria, Briana Shen, Jenny Shi, Cass Tao, Andy Tzeng, Hafsah Umerani, Isabelle Velloze, Fred Wang, Christina Wang, William Wen, Jessica Wong, Jean Wu, Elsa Yang, and Emily Zhang.

The AHS “We the People” Constitution Team consists of 30 seniors who are enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP) Government and who try out for the team. The class is taught by Arcadia High School social science teacher Megan Leahy, who coaches the team. The team also has dedicated volunteer coaches who serve as mentors for the students. Arcadia Mayor Gary Kovacic has been lending his expertise to the team since 1995 when his daughter Kelly was a member.

The “We the People” Constitution Team is one of the more than 50 academic clubs or teams at Arcadia High School, many of which also have a long history of putting Arcadia High academics in the national spotlight. The History Bowl team also qualified for its national championship in Washington, D.C., this past weekend, and the Ocean Sciences Bowl team competed in Ocean Springs, Miss. in a national tournament. The Science Bowl team will be in Washington, D.C., this weekend at its national competition, and the Quiz Bowl team qualified for a national championship tournament in Chicago at the end of May.
