Perhaps the only interior designer to host a monthly invite-only salon showcasing the brightest lights of the LA music scene, Jared Frank, from Topsy Design, is not your usual host, decorator, or curator. And very few people can claim, as he does, to be all three.
His home in Silverlake is quickly becoming one of the most notorious gathering spaces in Los Angeles: a cabinet of curiosities with trompe l’oeil murals on the walls, floors, and ceilings.
Featured in the hit coffee table book The New Bohemians, his off-the-wall space has played host to harpists, singer-songwriters, performance artists, and pretty soon he tells me, a boa constrictor. All this belies an interior design practice that is anything but carnivalesque.
He’s created serene interiors for the director of an upcoming superhero franchise. A Minimal mid-century lounge for a late night bandleader. And a refined deco pied-à-terre for a museum’s chief curator. His work seems to attract left-of-center clients who are eager to work with a designer who can create spaces that express their one-of-a-kind personalities.
Still in his early-thirties, we’re excited to see where his idiosyncratic practice goes. And if we keep getting the invites, we’ll be there every month to see what new trick he pulls out of his hat. We know this for sure, there is definitely something up this young man’s sleeve.
