Enjoy an interesting tour and tasting of the world of saké with expert Meher McArthur on Jan. 22, 2016 hosted by the Pasadena Village, 236 W. Mountain Street.

Saké, or rice wine, was first consumed in Japan over 2,000 years ago, centuries before tea appeared. Originally used in religious rituals to honor the gods, saké gradually took on a more secular role in Japanese culture and has long been enjoyed – hot or cold – by all levels of Japanese society, and has been enjoyed as a drink that not only brings people closer to the gods, but to each other.

McArthur will present a brief slide lecture about sake, its history, production, drinking customs, and related artworks. The lecture will be followed by a sake tasting with snacks.

McArthur is an art historian and the former curator of East Asian art at the Pacific Asian Museum in California. She is also the author of “Reading Buddhist Art: An Illustrated Guide to Buddhist Signs and Symbols” and “The Arts of Asia: Materials, Techniques, Styles.” She lives in Pasadena, California.

Space is limited, so please RSVP by calling (626) 765-6037 or emailing lina@pasadenavillage.org.
