Business Profile – Eat Feed Love
By J. Shadé Quintanilla
Eat Feed Love, a new business based in Southern California and Victoria, Canada, creates an opportunity for their customers to purchase delicious goods while also giving them a chance to help feed the millions of people suffering from hunger worldwide.
The online grocery company stands by the belief that there is a solution to world hunger. According to their website, there is enough food produced annually to feed the hungry, but due to a number of factors, like environmental conditions and political unrest, there is an unequal distribution of food. While the company does not think ending world hunger will be easy, Eat Feed Love aims to help by selling groceries and donating part of their profits to charities dedicated to eliminating world hunger. Since their launch in September, Eat Feed Love has fed close to 50,000 people, and with every purchase made, the number will keep growing.
The idea for the food e-commerce platform started with three friends and their pug, Cedric. Owners of Olive the Senses, an olive oil tasting store in Victoria, they decided to expand but also give back. Inspired by other conscious companies like Tom’s and Make a Stand, they started Eat Feed Love to sell great food and help end world hunger. But for Miguel Gauthier, one of the owners, the mission to help end world hunger is very personal. Losing his mother at a young age, Gauthier had to work at various jobs to help provide for himself and his family.
“I understand what it’s like to not always know where your next meal is coming from or where you’re going to sleep that night, and it’s a really, really terrible place to be in,” he said.
Combining his love of food and his goal to help feed people who are in similar situations he once was in, Gauthier, his brother, sister-in-law, and best friend created a grocery store for socially-conscious shoppers.
Eat Feed Love sells food products through their website to customers all over North America. From condiments, jams, and spreads, to oils and kitchenware, the online grocery store sells products mostly found at farmers markets. For every purchase a customer makes, the company donates to one of their partner charities dedicated to eliminating hunger through sustainable methods. Their partner organizations include World Vision, Feed the Children, Mercy Ships, and Canadian Foodgrains Bank. So far, Eat Feed Love has helped feed Syrian refugees, infants in Madagascar, and taught people around the world about improved farming practices and food security.
With products about the same price as similar products at grocery stores, like Ralphs and Whole Foods, Gauthier believes that Eat Feed Love gives shoppers an option to buy what they need and give back.
“I think most people would love the idea of ending world hunger,” he said. “The problem is that no one knows how to go about doing it,” he continued. “So, we thought if we build a platform that allows people to make a difference by simply choosing where to buy their groceries, then I think it becomes very easy for all of us to kind of do our part.”
