The Old Town Report for Dec. 10, 2015

Hats off to the City of Monrovia, Public Works, and the volunteers of the Old Town Decorating Committee! It is a huge commitment every year to get the town decorated by the day after Thanksgiving, so you all deserve a special thank you. The addition of the lighting in the parkways was a real plus, and the library is truly a showcase with the lighted tree on top and the snowflakes displayed on the building.

Each holiday season shares much of the tradition of past years, yet every year is unique. This December there are only three weekends prior to the Christmas holiday and, therefore, a shorter time to celebrate with Santa Breakfasts and our traditional downtown events. This coming Saturday, Dec. 12, Santa will magically appear at the Peach Café at 8 a.m., at Jake’s Roadhouse at 9:45 a.m., and at Le Gourmand at 10:30 a.m. It is best to call for reservations, however, if one breakfast is full, just head on to the next! Santa does his usual song and dance, makes times for photos, and – of course, has free gifts for all of the kiddies.

38 Degrees has their grand opening on Wednesday of this week. This has been a long-awaited opening and I am sure their first few days will be packed. The Sow House has also officially opened in the spot formerly known as Café Opera and it looks very interesting. The word is that their food is delicious and the décor is totally different than the previous restaurant. It looks like their front door is now directly on Myrtle Street (where the bar entrance used to be) and they have a small stage with entertainment in the larger dining room.

True to the winter months, it is a relatively slow season for the Street Fair. I say relatively because the crowds have thinned out as usual, but the difference this year is that there are more vendors than usual for December, which makes for a good-looking, entertaining show.

Continuing in the street celebration mode, we’re gearing up for our 5th Annual New Year’s Eve on Myrtle event. There will be a new band this year (Night Owl) and a new, higher stage so that everyone can see the live action. In addition, we will have better sound into the family area and the beer & wine garden. The New Year’s Eve Committee is especially proud that this year the event will include an enhanced family friendly area (open 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.) with more free offerings for the kiddies thanks to Monrovia Kiwanis and the Santa Anita Family YMCA and the City of Monrovia. As always, the event itself is totally free except for the $5 beverage charge in the Beer & Wine Garden. Once again, we remind everyone that the Garden is strictly for those aged 21 and over, with no babies or small children allowed. Alcoholic beverages are not allowed outside of the Garden except for designated sidewalk areas licensed by individual restaurants.
