‘Hairspray’ Will Now Be at Arcadia Performing Arts Center
Due to Arson at Monrovia High School

By Susan Motander

In the very best tradition of the theater, the musical Hairspray will go on at this weekend, but not quite as planned. The production will be held at the Arcadia Performing Arts Center, 188 Campus Road, Arcadia. The performances will be held on Friday evening at 8 p.m. with additional performances on Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m. and finally on Sunday at 5 p.m. The curtain will be held 10 minutes at each performance to accommodate those who did not hear of the change.

Patrick Garcia, Director of Performing Arts for the Monrovia Unified School District and the producer of the musical said that the cast and crew are continuing rehearsals and other preparations for the performances this weekend. “The show is still a go,” he said on Monday afternoon.

Earlier on Monday, rehearsal for that evening was cancelled, but then was merely moved to the auditorium of one of the elementary schools in the district. The largely professional cast quickly adapted to the disruption and are continuing to prepare.

On Tuesday the production team received the unwanted word that the Taylor Performing Arts Center could not be used despite the fact that it was not directly impacted by the fire. The insurance carrier for the school district determined that the smoke damage rendered the space unusable at the current time.
According to Garcia, the production team has pulled together and are implementing a immediate change. “Everyone is working to make this happen,” Garcia said.

Tickets for the performances are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors, and $15 for students with I.D. Tickets can be purchased through the center’s website and brown paper tickets at www.lktaylorperformingarts.com or at Monrovia Travel on Myrtle Avenue. Tickets will also be available at the door at each performance. A limited number of VIP tickets are also available for each performance for seating in the center section Rows 2 – 6 at $35.
