Business Profile: PizzaRev
By J. Shadé Quintanilla
It is no secret that New York has the reputation for the best pizza, and there is a rumor going around that pizza isn’t the greatest in SoCal. But whoever said that we have the worst pizza has not tried PizzaRev. A fast-casual restaurant that allows customers to craft their own pizza, PizzaRev has started, as the company calls it, “a PizzaRev-olution.”
Opening the first PizzaRev in Northridge, Irv Zuckerman and Rodney Eckerman and their sons started the franchise in 2012. Eckerman’s son, Nicolas, who had worked in the food industry for years, pitched the innovative idea of a more customized, interactive experience and PizzaRev was born. In just three short years, the restaurant has expanded and now has locations in Pasadena, Burbank, all over Southern California and in various states.
Voted as “Best Pizza” this year by the LA Daily News, PizzaRev is a craft your own pizza restaurant that stands out from its competitors. When customers go into a PizzaRev, they are greeted by three or more employees ready to help them make their pizza. By using different spoons and constantly using new gloves, the restaurant is dedicated to catering towards gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian customers. According to the Pasadena General Manager, Brandon Dunlop, PizzaRev is unique and even better than similar pizza franchises, like Blaze Pizza and Pieology, because it has quality ingredients and more options. Offering gluten-free dough and vegan options, like vegan cheese and vegan sausage, the restaurant aims to attract everyone.
“Quality control is very important to us,” said Dunlop. “We’re fast; we’re better.”
The first step in the PizzaRev experience is to choose your own dough. Offering freshly made dough, the restaurant’s pizza dough creates a Roman-style, thin crust that, to many, is the best part of the pizza. Customers also have their own pick from red, white, and BBQ sauces or just plain olive oil. A popular move of many is to mix the red and white sauce or even put a sauce on one half and a different on the other. Customers then can pick from different cheeses, like mozzarella, ricotta, and vegan cheese, and choose from a plethora of meats and toppings. The DIY pizza is then placed in the oven and out within minutes.
PizzaRev also gives customers to the option to choose from eight signature pizzas and allows them to create their own salads. A personal favorite of Pasadena General Manager is the Mediterranean pizza.
Other than serving the pizza cravings of customers, the restaurant is also dedicated to giving back to the local community through their fundraising program. Non-profit organization and schools can have their fundraisers at PizzaRev, receiving 20 percent of proceeds. In the past, PizzaRev has hosted fundraisers for Pasadena City College, La Salle High School and many other organizations in Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley. Since 2012, the company has donated more than $200,000 to charities and schools.
