Every year, U.S. News & World Report ranks each high school in the nation, and compares it against the competition, in-state as well as nationwide. The ranking system assesses a school by how well the pupils are prepared for college, how many students participate in the school’s Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) programs, and the student body as a whole. The schools are then awarded a gold, silver, or bronze medal and a ranking in state and nationwide.

This year, four high schools in the San Gabriel Valley ranked top 100 in-state. Among these four high schools are: La Cañada High School, Diamond Bar High School, San Marino High School, and South Pasadena Senior High School.

La Cañada High School, located in La Cañada, ranks in-state at #43, and nationwide at #232. With a student-teacher ratio of 24:1, and a total student body population summing up at 2,146, La Cañada High School surpasses California Academic Performance Index Evaluation requirements, and contains an above average percentage of students passing AP tests, at 88%.

San Marino High School, located in San Marino, trails close behind at #52 statewide, and #292 among the nation. With a STEM ranking of #169, and a gold medal awarded, San Marino High School exceeds the average achievements of an ordinary high school. The school contains 1,165 students, with 69% participating in the AP tests offered at San Marino High School.

Located in Diamond Bar, Diamond Bar High School has a total student population of 3,030, with 64% of pupils participating in the school’s Advanced Placement (AP) program. Residing in the Walnut Valley School District, this high school achieved a STEM ranking of #87, along with a state ranking of #65, and nationwide of #348.

South Pasadena Senior High School, a part of the South Pasadena Unified District, ranks #72 state-wide, and #373, nationwide. With a student body of 1,536, and a teacher student ratio at 1:26, South Pasadena Senior High School earned a gold medal badge. The school offers AP programs, and 66% of their students actively participate, with 83% of participants passing the rigorous AP test.
