Cardmaking Workshop – Monday, Nov. 2, from noon to 2 p.m. Surprise a special someone with a personalized, handmade greeting card. Whether it is a happy birthday, thank you, thinking of you or other sentiment, you will create a decorative card in your own unique style and have fun discovering your creativity while workshop leaders help you bring your ideas to life. All materials will be provided.
Stay Connected with Social Media – Tuesdays and Thursdays, Nov. 3 to 19, from 9 to 11 a.m. Learn how to keep in touch with family and friends via email, Skype, Facebook and other forms of social media during a 30-minute, one-on-one meeting with an instructor. You will choose which applications you want to learn. Bring a laptop or use one of the onsite computers. If you have an email address, bring it and your password. Smart Phones, Tablets and Computers – Any Questions? – Tuesdays and Thursdays, Nov. 3 to 19, from 10 to 11 a.m. Get the answers you need about technology devices, whether you own them already or are considering a purchase. Learn how to text, check voicemail, set an alarm, navigate the Internet, download apps and more.
Flu Shot Clinic – Wednesday, Nov. 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Pasadena Public Health Department will sponsor this clinic for anyone over the age of six months. Appointment cards are available at the Welcome Desk or by calling (626) 795-4331.
Veterans Services – Thursday, Nov. 5, at 10 a.m. Learn about eligibility, priority groups and health care issues related to seniors and aging services within the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs system. Community living, adult day care, tele-health services and palliative and hospice care for veterans also will be discussed.
Low Vision Class – Thursdays, Nov. 5, 12 and 19, from noon to 2 p.m. For anyone experiencing difficulty with daily tasks due to vision loss, this class combines a support group with guest speaker-led discussions about preventive treatments, balance, nutrition, transportation options and the latest technology devices to maximize the vision you have left. All are welcome, including family members and caregivers.
Friday Movie Matinees – Fridays, Nov. 6, 13 and 20, at 1 p.m. Nov. 6: About Time (2013, R) starring Domhnall Gleason and Rachel McAdams. A young man discovers he can travel in time and change what has happened in his own life. Nov. 13: McFarland, USA (2015, PG) starring Kevin Costner and Maria Bello. A football coach moves his family to a remote town and turns seven students with no hope into cross country stars. Nov. 20: A Town Like Alice (1956 NR) starring Virginia McKenna and Peter Finch. A newly wealthy English woman returns to Malaya to build a well for villagers who helped her in wartime (please note this film will begin at 2:30 p.m.).
A Writer’s Workshop – Fridays, Nov. 6 and 20, from 1 to 3 p.m. Are you writing a memoir, poetry, short stories or a novel? Get support and peer feedback from a group of writers engaged in similar activities. This new club meets the first and third Friday of every month. Parkinson’s Disease – Thursday, Nov. 12, at noon. Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder of the central nervous system, and 50,000 to 60,000 new cases are diagnosed annually. Presented by Dr. Tyler Cheung of Huntington Hospital, learn about symptoms, what to expect, quality of life issues and how to get care. LA Opera: Norma – Monday, Nov. 16, at 1 p.m. An LA Opera community educator will take participants through Vincenzo Bellini’s classic bel canto opera Norma. Torn between love and loyalty to her people, which will the Roman priestess Norma sacrifice?
Spirituality and Aging – Thursday, Nov. 19, at 10 a.m. Spirituality is the measure of how willing we are to allow grace – some power greater than ourselves – enter our lives and guide us along the way. Presented by Doug Edwards, director of church outreach for a nonprofit retirement housing organization.
Low Vision Screenings – Thursday, Nov. 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Low vision screenings are designed to assist partially sighted people in the selection of magnifiers and other devices to improve reading and other visual tasks. Health Fair – Friday, Nov. 20, from 9 to 11 a.m. A new medical safety identification plan, sponsored by New York Life, has been added to the popular monthly health fair. Bring your list of medications, doctors and emergency contacts and they will be placed on a personal identification card at no cost. Other health fair services include glucose, blood pressure and hearing screenings as well as counseling and health and community resources. For more information, call (626) 685-6732.
Founded in 1959, the Pasadena Senior Center is an independent nonprofit agency that offers recreational, educational, wellness and social services to people ages 50 and older in a friendly environment. Services are also provided for frail, low-income and homebound seniors.
