Parson’s Nose Opens 2015-16 Season With ‘Androcles and the Lion’
By George Bernard Shaw, Adapted by Lance Davis
Parson’s Nose Theater (PNT), the acclaimed classical comedic theater company, begins its 16th Season with Androcles and the Lion, opening Saturday, Oct. 31st. This is Shaw’s whimsical retelling of Aesop’s fable, adapted by Artistic Director Lance Davis.
“George Bernard Shaw couldn’t occupy all the soap boxes in Hyde Park’s ‘Speakers’ Corner” at once, ‘so he wrote plays so that his characters could,” explained Davis. “In Androcles and the Lion he takes Aesop’s fable and spins it into a discussion about religion, the state, animal rights and martyrdom, complete with a waltzing lion. Christians await their fate in the Coliseum, in a Rome that is very much like London. They have just enough time for Shaw to ask us, ‘What would you happily die for?’”
The cast includes many Parson’s Nose Company favorites and features Barry Gordon as Androcles, a dentist and Ian Sproul as The Lion. Rounding out the cast is Jill Rogosheske as Meghaera, Marisa Chandler as Lavinia, James Calvert as Captain, Paul Perri as Ferrovius, John Harnagel as Caesar, and Lance Davis as Centurion. The design team includes sound and lighting design by Angie Vaughn, costume design by Holly Willaume, and set design by Jen Orsini.
