A local boy scout, Eagle Scout Candidate Nathan McRae, wanted to give non-scout youth a chance to experience a Pinewood Derby race, something that is very familiar to Cub and Boy Scouts.

While working on his Eagle Scout Community Service Project, McRae decided to join up with the Monrovia based Boys & Girls Club of the Foothills to give some of their boys and girls a chance to build, decorate, and race the infamous derby cars and given them an experience that they might not otherwise have.

As the project manager, McRae solicited sponsorships from various organizations to pay for the cost of the project. Contributors were the Arcadia Rotary Club Foundation, the Monrovia Rotary Club, Waste Management, Ganahl Lumber, Posey Medical Supplies, and In-n-Out. The costs of the materials, supplies, and race track were completely subsidized by these and other donors.

The Pinewood Derby cars must be cut out from a block of wood and then fashioned and decorated into a racing car .The first cuts have been done. And for the next two Friday afternoons, Oct. 2nd and 9th, 2015, the boys and girls from the B&G Club will be sanding, painting, and decorating their racers! The big race will be on the afternoon of Oct. 16th, with prizes going to the big winners!

The building, decorating, and racing fits well with two key points of the B&G Club mission which is to develop Character & Education Skills.

The Boys and Girls Club of the Foothills is located at 600 S. Shamrock Ave, in Monrovia. Learn more by calling (626) 305-5353 or visiting http://foothillsbgc.org/. Their contact for this project is Mr. Peter Mejia.

Nathan McRae is registered with Boy Scout Troop 358 from San Marino, CA. He is a resident of Monrovia.
