An estimated 15,000 community members will come together for the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk in Pasadena. The annual 5K walk encourages healthy habits while raising funds to support the AHA’s research and education efforts to fight heart disease and stroke – the nation’s number one and number five killers.

Heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases claim the lives of more than 831,000 men, women and children every year. The Heart Walk is an annual tradition that brings the community together to raise awareness and critical funds to fight these diseases. The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA) believe that everyone deserves to live a healthier, longer life. Life is why AHA/ASA is committed to the mission of building healthier lives, free of heart disease and stroke, through cardiovascular research funding, patient care initiatives, health advocacy and community education.

Heart disease and stroke survivors, families who lost loved ones to cardiovascular disease and individuals who have made lifestyle changes for their heart and brain health will be in attendance, including:

– Denise Donatelli, three-time Grammy nominee who lost her son to heart disease. Denise will sing the national anthem.

– Ronny Ruriaf, NBA star who was diagnosed with heart disease two days after signing a rookie contract with the LA Lakers

– Jade Brambila, an 11 year-old girl born with a rare congenital heart defect who is now thriving, thanks to lifesaving open-heart surgery (her mother speaks Spanish)

– Amber Waller, a woman who collapsed from sudden cardiac arrest , but was saved by CPR three months after losing her mother to the same condition

– Papa Joe Aviance, who lost 250 pounds by walking regularly and improving his eating habits

– Maria Acereto, a young woman whose rare congenital heart defect was discovered 23 years after she was born (she speaks Spanish)

The Heart Walk will start at 8 a.m. at the Rose Bowl on Sept. 26. The Rose Bowl is located on 1001 Rose Bowl Dr. in Pasadena. For more information, visit www.HeartWalkLA.org or call (213) 291-7094.
