Each year tens of thousands escape to deserts of Nevada to construct Black Rock City, or more affectionately referred to by the locals as “The Playa.” Burning Man. It’s the transformational experience where each year, a city is birthed out of the sand, lived in for a few weeks, then ceremoniously burnt to the ground. This year, Burning Man spanned August 28th – September 5th.
The Burn was built upon and seeks to spread throughout the world co-founder Larry Harvey’s 10 principles of Radical Inclusion, Gifting, Decommodification, Radical Self-Reliance, Radical Self-Expression, Communal Effort, Civic Responsibility, Leaving No Trace, Participation, and Immediacy. The annual event serves as a mecca for burners to inspire, revitalize, explore themselves and create life-long connections. United by the belief that beautiful action, experiences, and ideas created on the Playa can beautify the world and change it and it’s inhabitants for the better. Note: rumor has it that some of our favorite festivals were thought up on the playa, such as Lightning in a Bottle, Desert Hearts and Woogie Weekend.
To celebrate this year’s efforts, we scoured the deepest corners of the internet to curate a peek into some of the most beautiful pieces of the playa. Shine on, you crazy beautiful dusty diamonds:
