A 36-year-old man was sentenced on Wednesday to 25 years and eight months in state prison for stabbing a family member and violently assaulting another man in an unrelated attack, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced. At Wednesday’s court appearance, Alfred Tapia pleaded no contest to two counts of attempted murder. Furthermore, Tapia admitted a special allegation that he personally inflicted great bodily injury during the commission of the crimes. Additionally, the defendant admitted he was convicted of first-degree burglary in 2005 in Los Angeles County.
Deputy District Attorney Bob Chen of the Hardcore Gang Division said on Dec. 3, 2013, Tapia went to his uncle’s home and had a disagreement over a personal matter. While at the house, Tapia stabbed his uncle and then left the scene. Two days later, the defendant went to a former gang member’s residence. Tapia chased the man outside and attacked him, Chen said. After the second assault, Tapia fled to Mexico. He was later located by law enforcement authorities and returned to Southern California. The case was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
